Britain threatens to block new EU treaty

Britain threatens to block new EU treaty if safeguard demands not met.
British Prime Minister David Cameron has said if London's demands are not met, he would block a new European Union treaty proposed by France and Germany aimed at saving the euro. He said if Euro-zone countries wanted to use European institutions to rescue the single currency, they would have to agree to safeguards demanded by Britain, which has not adopted the euro.

President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy has entered the debate on the debt crisis affecting the Euro-zone. Mr. Rompuy said, toughening the rules governing the country which is using the single currency could be achieved within existing EU treaties.

France and Germany said they have reached agreement on how the rules governing the Euro-zone should be significantly strengthened. But, Mr. Rumpuy, put his own ideas after speaking to all the leaders. He suggested that the rules could be toughened in the first instance without actually changing the treaties which would remove many political implications.
