US Open: Bhupathi, Paes to clash with Somdev & Filipino in QF


Somdev Devvarman and his Filipino partner Treat Conrad Huey will lock horns with Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in the US Open Tennis men's doubles pre-quarter final in New York. Somdev and Treat upstaged 14th seeds Argentines Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank 6-3, 6-4. Fourth seeds Paes and Bhupathi beat German Florian Mayer and Rogier Wassen of the Netherlands 7-6, 6-2.

Earlier fifth seeded Indo-Pak pair of Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi beat American James Cerretani and Philipp Marx of Germany 7-6, 7-6 in Men's doubles. Bopanna and Qureshi will take on Paul Hanley of Australia and Belgium's Dick Norman in the quarterfinals. It was a reasonably good day for the Indians as Leander Paes and his Russian partner Elena Vesninaseeded seventh entered the mixed doubles quarterfinals. Paes and Elena defeated the Taipei-Polish pair of Yung-Jan Chan and Mariusz Fyrstenberg 6-2, 6-7, 1-0.
