Myanmar president meets Canadian FM

Myanmar President U Thein Sein met with visiting Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird in Nay Pyi Taw Thursday shortly after his arrival earlier on the day, state radio and television reported in a night broadcast.
The two sides had discussions on enhancement of the two countries' bilateral ties and promotion of economic cooperation and investment, the report said.
Baird also met with speaker of the House of Representatives U Shwe Mann, Minister of Foreign Affaies U Wunna Maung Lwin and Minister of Rail Transportation U Aung Min, the report added. Baird is the first Canadian foreign minister making a "landmark" visit to Myanmar after a new civilian government was installed on March 30, 2011. His one-day official tour to Myanmar is to monitor the country's latest development in the light of coming April 1 by-elections. Canada downgraded its relations with Myanmar in late 1988 and imposed economic sanctions on Myanmar, barring trade with the country and banning visas for then Myanmar high ranking military officials.
The two countries normalized relations afterwards and are dealing at ambassadorial level. The Canadian embassy with Myanmar is stationed in Bangkok, Thailand.
