TEAM ANNA TO LAUNCH CAMPAIGN FOR JUSTICE TO IPS NARENDER KUMAR

The brazen killing of 2009-batch IPS officer Narender Kumar by the mining mafia in central Indian state Madhya Pradesh seems to be caught in the quagmire of political accusations between the Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Team Anna believes that the political parties are deliberately raking up the war of words for two reasons; to scuttle justice to the family of 30-year-old brave-heart who single handed took over the mafia that is patronized by politicians in the state and keep the much needed stringent whistle-blowers protection law as propounded in the Jan Lok Pal bill in cold storage.

While the family of the slain has demanded a CBI probe the government has so far denied one and has settled for a judicial probe. His family has also questioned the statements made by the gunner and driver of Narender indicating that there is more than what meets the eye.

The gory killing brings to fore the need for a strong whistle-blowers system under control on Jan Lokpal and Jan Lokayukta. We demand that Shivraj Singh Chavan chief minister of Madhya Pradesh should immediately pass the Jan Lokayuktam bill in the state like in the one passed in Uttrakhand. The country knows it well that the Congress sabotaged the Janlokpal bill meant to bring culprits to book in a speedy manner. If the Janlok Pal would have been implemented justice in Kumar’s death as sought by his family and the entire nation would not remain elusive like in the case of other deaths of similar nature that have taken place in the past. It is pertinent to mention that at least 15 Indians, who tried to blow lid of the corruption scams or fought the menace in other ways, have been killed since 2010. While the Jan Lokpal ensure security to the whistle blowers, the proposed bill on the issue floated by the government is inadequate and gives the powers to CVC which in a way is a statutory body and cannot act of its own. Strong whistle-blower protection law is needed, not the one presented by the UPA. Government’s law seeks to protect corrupt and victimize whistleblowers.

Indians won’t be mute spectators to this political tamasha this time round. Team Anna and thousands of Indians will organize a 3-day fast and protest in Bhopal to pay tribute to Narendra Kumar and demand a stronger law for the whistle-blowers.
