Myanmar's largest opposition National League for
Democracy party have taken part in parliamentary debates for the first
time after its landslide victory in April by-elections.About 40 upper and lower house NLD members attended a parliamentary
session that opened on Wednesday in the capital Naypyidaw. Party leader
Aung San Suu Kyi was absent. Reportedly she had other work she had to
finish.
One NLD lawmaker said that the representatives from the party want to learn more about parliamentary procedure and contribute to the country's democratization.A lawmaker from the ruling party said he welcomes the NLD members' participation.
He added that he hopes to work with them for the benefit of the country and its people.Aung San Suu Kyi is expected to join the session from Monday. Amendments to the pro-military constitution, which was one of the NLD's campaign pledges, will be discussed.
