Pakistan’s elected government completed its full five year term

Pakistan People’s Party, Pakistan’s elected government completed its full five year term on Saturday, first in the country to do so.
Pakistani Parliament dissolved at midnight after completing its term. However, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf is to remain as the caretaker prime minister.
Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said the constitutional transfer of power by an elected government is a victory of democratic forces.
In his farewell address to the nation over Radio Pakistan and Pakistan Television network last night, he thanked all democratic forces and institutions that played their role in strengthening democracy.
Raja Pervez Ashraf will remain as the caretaker prime minister until the next election, which is expected to be held in May.
Since Pakistan was founded in 1947, governments have been often overthrown in coups, toppled by political infighting or ending in assassinations
