The Sikyong Lobsang Sangay: We need Right to Information ACT in the Tibetan Govt. in Exile
by Tashi Drolma
“A lack of transparency results in distrust and a deep sense of insecurity.” - His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

The upcoming Sikyong’s Election is once again a very importance time for Tibetan in exile to vote for your choice. It is the right and duty to vote.

Recent years, the involvement of Tibetan in the Government’s functioning and administration has increase. With it, the collective work of leaders and the people brings in better and improvements in the Tibetan communities around the world.

As work gets more and more, the transparency and accountability of the leader (governing the government) to the people who voted them is very important.

Tibetan Government in Exile is a democratic system of government. The Eleventh Assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies promulgate and legalize the Charter of Tibetan-in-Exile. It’s been 56 years in exile and though we are struggling to return back to Tibet soon but at the same time, we are preparing for a long struggle and stay in exile. For that, we need to build and raise our Government in Exile stronger each day for which the responsibility not only goes to the Government but also to the People.

A democratic government is of the People, by the People, and for the People.

In a democratic system, people have the equal responsibility and right to know about their government. It will not only bring transparency and accountability but also makes greater success and better government.

The developed and the developing countries have adopted the Freedom of Information Act or Right to Information ACT as a Citizen Gateway. It brings greater transparency and accountability in the government. It has changed the way government and the leaders function. It has greatly helped in bringing people closer and informed about the functioning of their own Government. A better government means happier citizens.

We all are aware that the Freedom of Information Act in USA is effective since 1967 and often it is described as the law that keeps citizens in the know about their government. In 2005, Indian government too has passed the Right to Information ACT fully terming it as a Citizen Gateway. It has been a great success in bringing transparency and accountability in the government.

We also need it NOW!
So, we have started this online petition to Sikyong to bring this proposal in the on going Tibetan Parliament session and to gift the Tibetan people Freedom to ask the government that is formed and working for the people.
