307.2 Two-lane Cross Sections for New Construction – These standards
are to be used for highways on new alignment as well as on existing
highways where the width, alignment, grade, or other geometric
features are being upgraded. A 2-lane, 2-way roadbed consists of a
24-foot wide traveled way plus paved shoulders. In order to provide
structural support, the minimum paved width of each shoulder should be
2 feet.
305.5 Paved Medians (1) Freeways. (a) 6 or More Lanes–Medians 30 feet
wide or less should be paved. (b) 4 Lanes–Medians 22 feet or less in
width should be paved, between 22 feet and 30 feet wide be paved only
if a barrier is installed.
Corrupted, Compromised & Costly Four & Six Laning
California Freeway Users 95% Cars, India 30%-70% Trucks/CV
California adopts 24 feet wide Travelled way for Two Lanes in one
direction, Plus 2 Feet Shoulders on both sides and 22 ft paved Median
[24 + 4 +11 = 39 ft]. NH 4 Four Lanes have 21 feet Travelled Way – 1.5
feet pavement along median and 3 feet in outer side = 25.5 feet. THERE
IS 50% PAVED ROAD IN USA FOR TWO LANE x TWO LANE HIGHWAYS.

Accident Rate India 130 Per 100,000 MV – USA 13, UK 5, EU 5-10, Japan
6.5.  This is 10x to 20x of Developed Counties Avg.
Narmada Mainline Per Km Cost – $3m – 2 New Lanes NH – $5m
–    Cost of This ‘Two New Lanes’ is Exorbitant – Rs.19 Cr Per Km
completion but in collecting tolls more than double this cost to $5m
per km.  [Rs.4800 Cr for 256 km Bhavnagar-Somnath Four Laning]
–    This is roughly Rs.2 lakh per meter 21 ft road & Rs.4 Lakh per meter.
–    Narmada Mainline Average Width is 200ft and 15-20 ft deep with
Concrete Lining Cost just Rs.14 per km.
