The summit is also expected to come out with a joint statement named Astana Declaration to fight terrorism. Drug trafficking is another area of focus at the summit. Issues related to economic cooperation among the members are also being discussed.
Heads of several other countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Sri Lanka are also attending the summit in the capacity of Observers and Dialogue Partners of the SCO.
Earlier today, Mr Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the summit. Both leaders discussed bilateral matters and geo political developments in the region.
This is the first meeting between Mr Modi and Chinese President after India stayed away from ‘One Belt One Road’ Forum held in Beijing last month.
The meeting also took place amid differences between the two countries over a host of issues, including India’s bid for membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group and listing of Jaish e-Mohammad leader Masood Azhar as a terrorist by the United Nations.
Today’s brief meeting between the leaders is expected to ease the situation to settle the issues before they meet again for BRICS summit in September this year.
In the same vein, the Prime Minister exchanging pleasantries with Nawaz Shariff yesterday may bring a new dawn in the relationship between the two countries.
Later today, the Prime Minister along with Serbian leader Aleksandar Vučić will also take part in the inauguration of Astana Expo 2017, a world class exhibition.
115 countries and 22 international organisations including the UN are participating in the exhibition will be held over the next three months.
India, Pakistan become full members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation
