More people could travel as cancellation rate stable at 18%
New Delhi – 15th Nov; 2017 This Diwali, train travellers had something to smile about. Even with an increase in demand for train tickets, more passengers could successfully travel this Diwali. A study done by RailYatri shows that Railways has been able to sustain the cancellation of tickets at 18% for the last two years, which would mean that the remaining passengers managed to get confirmed ticket and thus complete their journey. The finding suggests that while the cancellation of waitlist ticket was as high as 25.5% in 2015, the number has been stable at 18% in 2016 and 2017.
Mr Manish Rathi, Co-founder and CEO RailYatri said, “Every year during Diwali, there is a huge demand for train tickets and many end up with waitlisted tickets and uncertain travel plans. However, this year it is heartening to see that fewer people had to cancel their tickets. It is definitely a good trend.”
The comparative finding shows many long distance train had a steep rise in ticket conformation as shown in the table below. Few train such as the Dehradun-Howrah Doon Express, the confirmation rate increased by over 20%.

Mr. Manish Rathi said, “The Diwali rush this year was nicely managed by adding Special trains at the right time and in the right route. Maximum Diwali rush was seen in trains with destinations in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Railways added 29 Special trains to match the Diwali rush besides introducing few new trains too. And surely these measures have paid off well.”
