Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is running for a Lower House seat, visited polling stations in her constituency in the south and was briefed by electoral officials.The election is seen as a test of whether Myanmar can hold a free and fair election, which the international community has been calling for.
The focus is now on how many votes the opposition National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi can garner and whether it can gain a foothold in national politics. The party is fielding candidates for most of the constituencies.Polling stations will be open until 4 PM and vote-counting starts shortly afterward.
